These free PDF tools do their work in your browser rather than on a server. That is the main thing that separates them from most online PDF services: your file is opened, changed and saved entirely on your own device, so it is never transmitted, never queued and never stored by anyone else.

They also share one document. Open a PDF in any of the editing tools and the others pick it up as it currently stands, so watermarking a report, numbering its pages, signing it and compressing it is one upload and one download rather than four of each. The document lives in the tab you have open and is gone when you close it.

Organising pages

Everything to do with which pages exist and what order they are in.

  • Organise PDF shows every page as a thumbnail so you can drag them into a new order, rotate, duplicate or delete them, and apply the lot as one change.
  • Delete PDF pages removes the pages you pick and keeps the rest — the blank sheet a scanner added, or the terms nobody needs.
  • Extract PDF pages keeps only the pages you choose, either as a separate download or by trimming the document you are working on.
  • Rotate PDF turns pages that were scanned sideways, and writes the rotation into the file so it survives being emailed and printed.
  • Split PDF takes a page range out, or bursts the document into one file per page.
  • Merge PDF combines several documents into one, in the order you arrange them.

Editing a document

  • Watermark PDF stamps text such as DRAFT or CONFIDENTIAL across the pages, at the size, angle, colour and opacity you set.
  • Add page numbers numbers the pages in any of six positions, starting at whatever number you need so a cover can be skipped.
  • Sign PDF places a drawn or typed signature on a page. It is a signature image, not a certificate-based digital signature.
  • The PDF metadata editor reads and changes the title, author, subject and other properties a document carries, or clears them out entirely.

Making a file smaller

  • Compress PDF re-encodes the images inside a document and leaves the text and vector graphics exactly as they are, so the result is still selectable and searchable.
  • You can aim for a specific file size when a form imposes an upload limit. If the document cannot reach it, you are told so plainly rather than handed a file that missed the target.

Converting to and from PDF

These produce a different kind of file, so they finish a sequence rather than continuing it — there is no PDF left to pass on.

  • PDF to Word extracts the text into an editable DOCX.
  • PDF to Text pulls the words out as plain text or Markdown, with headings, lists and tables kept where possible.
  • PDF to Excel pulls detected tables into a spreadsheet.
  • PDF to JPG and PDF to PNG render each page as an image at the resolution you choose.
  • JPG to PDF builds a PDF from photos or screenshots, and the result can be carried straight into the editing tools.

Looking inside a document

  • The PDF inspector reports page count and sizes, rotation, how much text can actually be extracted, images, links and form fields.
  • It also detects scans. A PDF of photographed pages looks identical to a text PDF from the outside, and it is the reason PDF to Word sometimes produces an empty file — the inspector says so instead of leaving you guessing.
  • Extract PDF images pulls the pictures out of a document as PNG files, individually or as a ZIP.
  • The PDF metadata viewer shows the author, creating software, dates, PDF version and encryption status a file carries, without changing it.
  • The PDF page counter counts the pages in one file or a whole batch at once, with a total across them - handy for print and translation quotes.
  • The PDF word counter counts words and characters page by page, gives a reading time, and lists scanned pages that have no text to count.
  • The PDF file size calculator estimates how large a PDF will be from its pages, images, resolution and fonts, and shows a real file's size per page.

What "nothing is uploaded" actually means

Most free PDF sites work by sending your file to a server, processing it there and returning the result. That is a reasonable design, but it means your contract, payslip or medical letter travels across the internet and sits in someone else's storage, however briefly.

These tools use the browser's own capabilities to read and write PDF files. Your files never leave your device: the code contains no upload request, so there is nothing that could send a document anywhere even in principle. The working document is held in the tab's memory and nowhere else — not in storage on your disk, and not on any server — which is why reloading the page starts you over.

  • No transfer time, even for large documents.
  • No server-side copy of your file, and no retention policy to read.
  • No upload limit — the practical ceiling is your device's available memory.
  • No account, no watermark and no cap on how many times you use them.

What these tools cannot do

Being honest about the limits is more useful than pretending there are none.

  • The editing and conversion tools cannot open password-protected PDFs. Remove the protection with the software that applied it, then come back. The metadata viewer and word counter can read a protected file if you type its password, which stays in your browser. There is no tool here to add or remove a password.
  • These PDF tools do not read text out of a scan themselves - PDF to Word and PDF to Excel need real, extractable text to work with. For a scanned document, use the OCR workspace first.
  • Signing places a signature image on the page. It is not a certificate-based digital signature and proves nothing about who applied it.
  • A watermark is a visible mark, not protection. Anyone with a PDF editor can remove it.
  • Merging and splitting do not carry across bookmarks or form fields, and they invalidate existing digital signatures — so sign after merging, not before.
  • Converting a PDF page to an image turns its text into pixels, so the result is no longer selectable or searchable.
  • Very large files, or long documents at high resolution, can be slow or run out of memory on an older phone, because the work happens on your device rather than on a server.

Frequently asked questions

Are these PDF tools free?

Yes — all of them, with no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on file size or how often you use them.

Are my PDF files uploaded anywhere?

No. Your files never leave your device. Every tool here reads and writes your file inside your browser, so nothing is transmitted to VSThiran and no copy is kept on a server.

Can I use several tools on the same PDF without uploading it again?

Yes. Once a document is open, the other PDF tools pick it up as it currently stands, so you can organise, watermark, number, sign and compress from a single upload and download once at the end. Conversions to Word, Excel or images produce a different kind of file, so those finish the sequence rather than continuing it.

Where is my document kept while I work on it?

In the memory of the tab you have open, and nowhere else. It is not written to your disk, not put in browser storage, and not sent anywhere. That is also why reloading the page clears it — the trade for never persisting the file is that a refresh means opening it again.

Can I undo a change?

Yes. Each operation is a step, and Undo, Redo and Reset move between them. The last few steps are kept rather than all of them, because every step is a full copy of the document and an unlimited history would exhaust the tab’s memory on a large file.

Does merging, splitting or rotating reduce quality?

No. Pages are copied across as they are rather than recompressed or re-rendered, and rotation is recorded as an instruction to the reader rather than by redrawing anything. Only compression changes image data, and it deliberately leaves text and vector graphics untouched.

Can I use these tools on a phone?

Yes. They all work on mobile browsers, and the page organiser has arrow buttons as well as dragging because drag-and-drop does not work on a touch screen. Bear in mind that large documents use memory, so a big file may be slower on an older phone.

Do the tools work with password-protected PDFs?

The editing and conversion tools do not: remove the protection first using whatever applied it. The PDF metadata viewer and PDF word counter can read a protected file once you type its password, which is used only in your browser. There is no tool here to add or remove a password.

Can I get the text out of a scanned PDF?

Not with these PDF tools directly - reading text from a picture of a page needs OCR. VSThiran's OCR workspace does this in your browser; the PDF inspector will tell you whether a document is a scan first.
