Free PDF to Word Converter

Free to useNo sign-up requiredNo watermarkRuns in your browser

This free PDF to Word converter extracts the contents of a PDF into an editable .docx file: paragraphs, headings, bold and italic, tables rebuilt as real Word tables, and embedded images carried across.

It runs entirely in your browser, so you can convert PDF to Word without uploading anything. Most online PDF to Word services send your document to a server, which for a contract, a payslip or a medical letter means handing it to a third party. Here the file never leaves your device, and no email address is asked for.

How this tool works

  1. Choose your PDF

The document is opened locally and you are told the page count and roughly how many words it contains.

  2. Set the options

Rebuild tables, include images, and add a heading before each page - all optional.

  3. Convert

The Word document is assembled in your browser.

  4. Download the .docx

It opens in Word, Google Docs, LibreOffice and Pages.

How it works

The text is read from the PDF along with each fragment's position and font. Fragments are grouped into lines by their vertical position, and lines that sit in aligned columns with clear gaps are identified as table rows.

Heading levels are inferred from font size relative to the most common size on the page, so a document's own hierarchy is reflected rather than everything arriving as flat body text. Bold and italic come from the font names.

Detected tables are rebuilt as genuine Word tables you can edit, not as text with spaces between the columns.

Embedded JPEG images are extracted and placed into the document. Images in other encodings are skipped rather than inserted incorrectly.

Everything happens on your device, so there is no upload wait and no server-side copy of your document.

What is preserved, and what is not

A PDF records where marks sit on a page. It does not record what a paragraph, a heading or a table is - those are things a converter has to infer. Being straight about the limits is more useful than promising a perfect copy.

  • Preserved: all the text, reading order, paragraph breaks, heading levels from font size, bold and italic, tables where the layout makes them detectable, and embedded JPEG images.
  • Not preserved: exact visual layout. Multi-column pages become a single flow of text.
  • Not preserved: absolute positioning, text boxes, headers and footers as distinct regions, and precise fonts - the document uses Word's defaults.
  • Not preserved: form fields, annotations, comments and digital signatures.
  • Not possible: text from a scanned PDF. If the page is a photograph of text, there is no text to extract and OCR would be needed.

Scanned PDFs need OCR

If the tool reports that no text could be found, the PDF is a scan - an image of a page rather than text. Try selecting text in the original with your mouse: if nothing highlights, there is nothing to extract.

Converting a scan needs optical character recognition, which reads the shapes of letters from the picture rather than recovering text that was never there. This converter does not do that itself - run the OCR workspace on the scan first, then convert its result here. OCR is not perfect, so proofread the text it produces either way.

Worked examples

A report you need to edit

Text, headings and tables come across, ready to rework in Word without retyping.

A table of figures

A cleanly laid-out table is rebuilt as an editable Word table rather than arriving as loose text.

A scanned letter

Will produce nothing, and the tool says so plainly - the page is a picture, not text.

Frequently asked questions

Is this PDF to Word converter free?

Yes - free, no sign-up, no watermark, no email required and no limit on the number of files.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. Your files never leave your device. The file is opened and processed by your browser on your own machine, so nothing is transmitted to VSThiran and no copy of your document is ever stored on a server.

Can I convert a PDF to Word without uploading it?

Yes - that is the whole design. The conversion happens inside your browser, so the PDF is never sent to us or to anyone else. Almost every other free PDF to Word converter uploads your document to a server first, which is worth knowing if the file is confidential.

Do I need to sign up or give an email address?

No. There is no account, no email step and no daily conversion limit. Choose a file and download the Word document.

Will the Word document look exactly like the PDF?

No, and no converter can honestly promise that. You get the text, headings, bold and italic, tables and images in the right order and structure. Exact page layout, columns and positioning are not reproduced. For editing the content, that is normally what you want.

Does it work with scanned PDFs?

Not directly - a scan is a picture of a page with no text to extract, and this tool tells you clearly when it finds none. Run the OCR workspace on the scan first, then convert its result here.

Are tables converted properly?

Where the table is laid out with clean column alignment, yes - it becomes a real editable Word table. Where a "table" is really just text nudged into place with spaces, the result will need tidying.

Are images included?

Embedded JPEG images are carried into the document. Images stored in other encodings are skipped rather than inserted incorrectly. You can turn images off entirely if you only want the text.

What can I open the file with?

It is a standard .docx, so Microsoft Word, Google Docs, LibreOffice Writer, Apple Pages and most other editors will open it.
