Free PDF to PNG Converter

This free PDF to PNG converter renders each page of a PDF as a lossless PNG image. You choose the resolution, preview every page, and download a single one or all of them at once.
PNG is the right choice when the page is mostly text, tables or line art. Its lossless compression keeps letter edges crisp, whereas JPEG introduces soft halos around text that are obvious once you notice them.
How this tool works
Choose your PDF
Drag it onto the page or click to browse. The file is read locally and the page count appears once it opens.
Pick the resolution
Scale 2 suits most uses. Scale 3 gives roughly 300 DPI on an A4 page, which is enough for printing.
Review each page
Every page is rendered and previewed with its pixel dimensions and file size.
Download one page or all
Each preview has its own download button, or save every page at once as numbered PNG files.
How it works
Each page is drawn onto a canvas at the scale you choose and exported as PNG. The rendering is done by your browser, so nothing is uploaded at any point.
PNG compression is lossless, so the exported image is a pixel-exact record of what was rendered. That is what keeps text sharp, and it is also why PNG files are larger than the equivalent JPG.
The scale setting controls resolution. Scale 1 is roughly screen size; 2 and 3 produce progressively sharper images at the cost of larger files and slower rendering.
Pages are rendered one at a time in your browser, so a long document at high resolution takes a while. A progress indicator shows which page is being worked on.
PNG or JPG for a PDF page?
- PNG for pages that are mostly text, tables, diagrams or line art. Edges stay perfectly sharp.
- JPG for scanned pages and anything photographic, where the files are far smaller and the compression is hard to see.
- PNG if the image will be edited afterwards - repeated JPEG saves accumulate visible damage.
- JPG if you are emailing a lot of pages and total size matters more than perfect edges.
Choosing a resolution
| Scale 1 | About 595 × 842 px on A4 - screen preview and thumbnails |
|---|---|
| Scale 1.5 | Sharper on-screen viewing, slide decks |
| Scale 2 | About 1190 × 1684 px - the sensible default |
| Scale 3 | About 300 DPI - suitable for printing |
Worked examples
A page for a presentation
Render at scale 2 and download the single page you need, ready to drop into a slide.
A diagram to reuse
PNG keeps the lines crisp, unlike JPG which softens them.
Every page as an image
Use "Download all" to save each page as a separate numbered PNG named after the source file.
Frequently asked questions
Is this PDF to PNG converter free?
Yes - free, no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on the number of pages or files.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. Your files never leave your device. The file is opened and processed by your browser on your own machine, so nothing is transmitted to VSThiran and no copy of your document is ever stored on a server.
Why choose PNG rather than JPG?
PNG is lossless, so text and line art stay perfectly sharp. JPG is smaller but introduces soft artefacts around letter edges, which is very visible on a text page.
Will the PNG have a transparent background?
No. PDF pages are rendered onto a white background, matching how the page prints. PNG can hold transparency, but a page rendered from a PDF has none to preserve.
Can the text still be selected in the PNG?
No. Converting a page to an image turns everything on it, including text, into pixels. If you need selectable text, keep the original PDF or use the free PDF to Word converter.
Does it work with password-protected PDFs?
No. Encrypted files cannot be opened without the password. Remove the protection first with whatever applied it.
