Free PDF Text Editor - Fix a Typo or Change a Line
Free to useNo sign-up requiredNo watermarkRuns in your browser
This free tool changes text that is already on a PDF page - a wrong name, a typo, an out-of-date figure. Click the line on the rendered page, type the correction, and apply it.
Be clear about what this is: a PDF page has no paragraphs to reflow, only text drawn at fixed positions, so this covers the old line with a patch matching the page behind it and draws the new text at the same spot in a close standard font. It does not rewrap the rest of the page, and it cannot match the document's own typeface exactly.
The old text is covered, not deleted from the underlying file - it can still be found by copying the text or by removing the patch in another editor. Never use this to remove sensitive or confidential information; it is for fixing what a line says, not for redacting it.
How this tool works
Open the PDF
Drag it in or browse for it. It stays on your device.
Click a line of text
The page is rendered, and every line pdf.js can read becomes clickable.
Type the correction
An editable box appears in place, pre-filled with the line as it reads now.
Apply and download
Every pending change on the page is applied in one step, which Undo can reverse as a whole.
How it works
pdf.js reads each line's exact position, size and approximate style (bold, italic, serif) from the page's own text-drawing instructions, the same engine that already powers this site's PDF to Word and PDF to Excel converters.
Applying a change draws a rectangle over the old line, coloured by sampling a nearby point on the rendered page so it blends with a shaded or coloured background rather than leaving a white patch on one. The new text is then drawn on top in a standard font chosen to match bold, italic and serif as closely as the built-in fonts allow.
A replacement much longer than the original shrinks to fit where it can; if it still cannot fit even shrunk, it is drawn in full rather than clipped, and the tool says so - an honest overflow, not a silently broken layout.
Only WinAnsi (Latin-alphabet) text can be drawn, the same restriction this site's watermark and page-number tools already have. A document in Arabic, CJK or another non-Latin script cannot have its text replaced this way.
What this is, and what it is not
- It is: a way to fix a line that is wrong - a misspelled name, an old date, a number that changed.
- It is: entirely private. The document never leaves your device.
- It is not: a word processor. There is no reflow - a longer replacement does not push later lines down.
- It is not: redaction. The old text is covered, not removed from the file's data.
- It is not: a font-matching tool. Replacements use a close standard font, not the document's own typeface.
If you need to remove information, not just correct it
Covering a line with a patch is enough when the goal is to correct what a reader sees. It is not enough when the goal is to make sure nobody can recover what used to be there - a proper redaction tool strips the underlying data itself, and this is not one. If the document might later be searched, copied from, or opened in another editor, do not rely on this to hide anything sensitive.
Frequently asked questions
Is my PDF uploaded anywhere?
No. The file is opened and changed by this page on your own device, using your browser. It is never sent to VSThiran and no copy is stored on any server. It is held only in the tab you have open, which is also why reloading the page clears it.
Does this really delete the old text?
No, and it is worth being direct about that: the old line is covered by an opaque patch, not removed from the PDF's own data. Selecting and copying text, or opening the file in another PDF editor and removing the patch, can still reveal what was there. Use this for corrections, not for removing sensitive information.
Will the replacement look exactly like the original text?
Not exactly. The position and approximate size match, and bold, italic and serif are matched where pdf.js can tell what the original was, but the replacement is drawn in a standard PDF font rather than the document's own typeface, since this tool does not embed custom fonts.
What if my replacement text is much longer than the original?
It shrinks to fit the original line's width where it can. If it still does not fit even shrunk, it is drawn at full size anyway rather than being cut off, and the tool tells you so - it may then overlap whatever comes after it on the page.
Why can't I click some of the text on the page?
Only text pdf.js can read as real text becomes clickable. A scanned page - a photograph of text rather than real text - has none, and needs OCR first before there is anything to edit.
Can I undo something?
Yes. Each operation is recorded as a step, and Undo, Redo and Reset move between them. The last few steps are kept rather than all of them, because every step is a full copy of the document and keeping an unlimited number would exhaust the tab’s memory on a large file.
Can I use another PDF tool on the result without downloading it first?
Yes. Once a PDF is open, the other PDF tools pick it up as it currently stands, so you can organise, watermark, number, sign and compress a document from a single upload and download once at the end. Conversions to Word, Excel or images produce a different kind of file, so those finish the sequence rather than continuing it.
