Free PDF Splitter

Free to useNo sign-up requiredNo watermarkRuns in your browser

This free PDF splitter does two jobs. It can extract exactly the pages you want into a new PDF - a range like 12-18, or a scattered selection like 1, 4, 9-11 - or it can break a document into one file per page.

Pages are copied rather than re-rendered, so the extracted pages are identical to the originals with text still selectable. Your file is opened on your own device and never uploaded, and the page count and selection are shown before you download anything.

How this tool works

  1. Choose your PDF

Drag it in or click to browse. The file opens locally and its page count is shown, which is what the range is validated against.

  2. Pick extract or split

"Extract pages" builds one new PDF from the pages you name. "Split into single pages" produces one file per page.

  3. Enter the pages you want

Commas for individual pages, hyphens for ranges: 1, 3, 5-8. The summary tells you exactly how many pages you will get before you commit.

  4. Download

The new file is built on your device. Splitting into single pages produces one download per page, numbered so they stay in order.

How it works

Open a PDF and choose what you want out of it: a range such as 1-5, a selection such as 2, 7, 9-12, or every page as its own file.

Page ranges use the numbering you see when reading the document, starting at page 1. Ranges are inclusive, so 3-5 gives you pages 3, 4 and 5.

The selected pages are copied into a new document without re-rendering, so text stays selectable and quality is unchanged.

Pages beyond the end of the document are skipped rather than causing an error, which is what makes 2-9999 a reliable way to say "everything except the first page" without knowing the page count.

How to write a page range

The syntax is deliberately forgiving. Spaces are ignored, out-of-range pages are skipped, and the summary always tells you what you are about to get.

Range syntax, on a 20-page document
5Just page 5
3-7Pages 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7
1, 4, 9-11Pages 1, 4, 9, 10 and 11
2-9999Everything except page 1
9-7Pages 9, 8, 7 - counting down
5, 1, 3Those pages, in that order

Removing pages instead of extracting them

There is no separate "delete pages" mode, because extraction already does it. Instead of naming the pages to remove, name the ones to keep.

  • To drop a cover page from a 30-page document, enter 2-30 - or just 2-9999 and let it clamp.
  • To remove page 15 from a 20-page document, enter 1-14, 16-20.
  • To keep only the first and last pages, enter 1, 20.

Reordering pages while you extract

Pages come out in the order you list them, not in document order. Entering 5, 1, 3 produces a three-page PDF with page 5 first. That makes the splitter a quick way to reorder a short document without a full PDF editor - extract every page in the order you want, and you have a rearranged file.

Worked examples

Extract one section

Enter 12-18 to pull a single chapter out of a longer report.

Remove a cover page

Enter 2-9999 to keep everything except the first page; the range is clamped to the real page count.

Pick scattered pages

Enter 1, 4, 9-11 to build a new document from just those pages, in that order.

One file per page

Switch to single-page mode on a 5-page document and you get five separate PDFs, each named with its page number.

Frequently asked questions

Is this PDF splitter free?

Yes - free, with no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on document size or how often you use it.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. Your files never leave your device. The file is opened and processed by your browser on your own machine, so nothing is transmitted to VSThiran and no copy of your document is ever stored on a server.

How do I write the page range?

Use commas for individual pages and hyphens for ranges - for example 1, 3, 5-8. Spaces are ignored, and pages beyond the end of the document are skipped rather than causing an error.

How do I delete pages from a PDF?

Extract the pages you want to keep instead. To remove page 15 from a 20-page document, enter 1-14, 16-20 and the result omits page 15.

Does splitting reduce quality?

No. Pages are copied as they are, so the extracted pages are identical to the originals and the text remains selectable.

Can I reorder pages while splitting?

Yes. Pages come out in the order you list them, so entering 5, 1, 3 produces a document with those pages in that sequence.

Can I split a password-protected PDF?

No. Encrypted files cannot be read without the password. Remove the protection first, then split.
