How to edit a PDF without Acrobat
"Editing a PDF" is usually one of five different jobs. Open the file once and you can do all of them in sequence - reorder the pages, mark it, number it, sign it and shrink it - then download once at the end.
Free, no sign-up, and your file is read on your own device rather than uploaded.
Most people who want to "edit a PDF" do not want to rewrite its sentences. They want the pages in a different order, a page removed, a DRAFT stamp across it, page numbers on it, or a signature at the bottom. Those are all things a browser can do to a PDF without any software installed.
Rewriting the actual text is the exception, and it needs a different route: convert to Word, edit there, and export. That loses the exact layout, which is why it is worth being sure you need it before you start.
- Get the pages right
- Mark it
- Number the pages
- Sign it
- Make it smaller, then download
The steps
Get the pages right
Every page as a thumbnail. Drag them into a new order, rotate a scan that came out sideways, duplicate one, or delete the pages you do not want - then apply the whole board as a single change.
Organise PDFMark it· only if you need it
Stamp text across the pages at the size, angle and opacity you choose. Useful for DRAFT, CONFIDENTIAL or a company name. It is a visible mark, not protection - anyone with a PDF editor can take it off.
Watermark PDFNumber the pages· only if you need it
Six positions, any starting number. You can skip a cover so that the second sheet of the file is numbered page 1, which is how printed documents are normally numbered.
Add Page NumbersSign it· only if you need it
Draw a signature with a mouse or finger, or type your name, then click the page where it goes. This places a picture of a signature - the same thing as signing a printout and scanning it.

Compression re-encodes the images and leaves the text alone, so the result is still selectable and searchable. You can aim for a specific size when a form imposes a limit.
Compress PDF
A typical run
A twelve-page contract comes back from a scanner with page 7 upside down and a blank sheet at the end. It needs a DRAFT stamp, page numbers, a signature on the last page, and it has to be under 2 MB for the portal that receives it.
That is one upload. Organise removes the blank page and turns page 7 the right way up; watermark stamps it; page numbers skip the cover so the first page of content reads 1; the signature goes on what is now page 11; and compression brings it under the limit. One download at the end, and nothing left a device at any point.
What this cannot do
Worth knowing before you start, rather than halfway through.
- None of this rewrites the words on the page. To change the text, convert to Word, edit it there, and accept that the layout will not survive exactly.
- Converting a scanned PDF to Word or Excel this way produces an empty result, because there is no text in a scan to convert - the PDF inspector will tell you when a document is in that state, and the OCR workspace reads the text out of it instead.
- Signing places a signature image. It is not a certificate-based digital signature and proves nothing about who applied it.
- Password-protected PDFs cannot be opened, and there is no tool here to add or remove a password.
Common questions
- Can I edit a PDF for free without installing anything?
- Yes, for everything except rewriting the text: page order, rotation, deletion, watermarks, page numbers, signatures, metadata and compression all work in the browser with no software and no account.
- Do I have to upload the PDF again for each change?
- No. Open it once and the other PDF tools pick it up as it currently stands. Watermarking, numbering, signing and compressing a document is one upload and one download rather than four of each.
- How do I change the actual text in a PDF?
- Convert it to Word, edit it there, and save. Be aware that conversion recovers the text and rough structure rather than a pixel-perfect copy, so complex layouts will need tidying. If the PDF is a scan there is no text to recover at all.
- Is my PDF uploaded to a server?
- No. It is opened and changed by the page on your own device, and it is held only in the tab you have open. Reloading the page clears it, which is the trade for never storing it anywhere.
- Can I undo a change?
- Yes. Each operation is a step, and Undo, Redo and Reset move between them. The last few steps are kept rather than all of them, because every step is a full copy of the document.
- Does any of this reduce the quality?
- Only compression, and only to the images - it deliberately leaves text and vector graphics untouched. Reordering and rotating change nothing about how the page is drawn.
The tools this uses
- Organise PDFReorder, rotate, duplicate and delete pages on a visual board of thumbnails.
- Watermark PDFStamp text across the pages, at the size and angle you choose.
- Add Page NumbersNumber the pages, starting wherever you need.
- Sign PDFDraw or type a signature and place it on a page.
- Compress PDFShrink a PDF by recompressing its images, leaving the text untouched.
