Compress a PDF to Under 200 KB

Free to useNo sign-up requiredNo watermarkRuns in your browser

200 KB is a specific, common ceiling - exam boards, embassy and visa portals, and government upload forms frequently ask for a document under exactly this size, not just "smaller." This tool aims directly at that number: enter 200 as the target, and the gentlest compression setting that gets under it is used automatically, tried in increasing steps rather than jumping straight to maximum compression.

It runs the same engine as the main PDF compressor - re-encoding embedded photographs, never flattening pages to pictures - so a document that reaches 200 KB this way is still selectable and searchable text, not a scanned-looking image of itself.

How this tool works

  1. Choose your PDF

Read straight from your device - there is no upload.

  2. The 200 KB target is already set

Switch to a different number if your form asks for something else.

  3. Compress

Settings are tried in increasing steps until the file is under 200 KB, or the smallest achievable size is reached.

  4. Download

You are told plainly if 200 KB could not be reached, and given the smallest version this tool could produce instead.

How it works

The document's embedded photographs are re-encoded at progressively lower quality settings until the whole file is under 200 KB, stopping at the first setting that gets there - so a document that only needs light compression is not needlessly over-compressed.

Text, fonts and vector graphics are never touched, which is what keeps a compressed form or scan still readable and selectable rather than a blurry picture of text.

A PDF that is mostly text (little or no embedded photographs) may not be able to reach 200 KB at all, since there is nothing left to compress - this is stated plainly rather than papered over with a fake result.

Where a 200 KB limit shows up

  • Government exam and recruitment portals (SSC, banking exams, civil service applications) frequently cap document uploads at 200 KB or 100 KB.
  • Some visa and embassy application portals set a 200 KB ceiling for supporting documents.
  • Older or simpler web forms sometimes set a flat, conservative upload limit regardless of what the document actually is.

If 200 KB is not achievable

A multi-page scanned document is the hardest case - each page is effectively a full-page photograph, and there is a real floor below which compression starts destroying legibility rather than saving space. If 200 KB genuinely cannot be reached without the result becoming unreadable, this tool says so and returns the smallest usable version instead of silently producing something illegible.

Splitting the document and uploading fewer pages, or scanning at a lower resolution to begin with, are the next options once compression alone cannot get there.

Worked examples

A single-page scanned ID or certificate

Usually reaches 200 KB comfortably, since one page has much less to compress than a multi-page scan.

A 5-page scanned application form

May need Strong-level compression to get under 200 KB, with a visible but still legible drop in image sharpness.

A text-only cover letter exported from Word

Is normally already well under 200 KB before compression, since it has no images to shrink.

Frequently asked questions

Is this free and does it upload my file?

Free, no sign-up, and your file never leaves your device - the whole job runs in your browser.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. Your files never leave your device. The file is opened and processed by your browser on your own machine, so nothing is transmitted to VSThiran and no copy of your document is ever stored on a server.

Why can't my PDF reach 200 KB?

Usually because it is a multi-page scan, where each page is effectively a photograph. There is a real limit to how far an image can be compressed before it becomes illegible, and this tool stops there rather than producing an unreadable file that technically hits the number.

Does compressing to 200 KB make my document blurry?

Getting a scanned document that small usually needs a visible quality trade-off, especially on multi-page files. A single-page document or one that is mostly text can often reach 200 KB with little visible change.

Can I use a different target size instead of 200 KB?

Yes - the target field accepts any size; 200 is simply set as the starting point since it is the most commonly requested limit.
