Open toolMost of these questions have the same root: sizes are measured in bytes, internet speeds in bits, and a byte is 8 bits. That is why a 100 Mbps connection shows 12.5 MB/s in a download client, and why a 100 GB game takes over two hours on it rather than a quarter of an hour.
The download calculators turn a size and a speed into a realistic best-case time. The storage calculator checks whether your games fit and suggests an SSD size with headroom. The data usage calculators add up gaming, messaging and video calls so you can see what a month really costs your plan.
Which calculator do you need?
- How long a download will take: the Steam, PS5 or Xbox download time calculator, each with notes on how that platform downloads and installs.
- Whether your games will fit, and which SSD to buy: the game storage calculator.
- How much data gaming uses, including cloud gaming and updates: the gaming data usage calculator.
- How much data your messaging and calls use: the WhatsApp and Zoom data usage calculators.
What these calculators do not claim
- Any particular game’s size. Sizes change with every update, so you enter the size your store or console shows.
- Any guaranteed speed from a platform or server. The download time is a best case at the speed you enter.
- Exact data use. Per-hour and per-item figures are typical values - editable, and labelled as such - because real usage varies with quality settings and conditions.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my download speed shown eight times lower than my plan?
Plans are sold in megabits per second (Mbps) and many download screens show megabytes per second (MB/s). Divide Mbps by 8: 100 Mbps is 12.5 MB/s.
How long does it take to download 1 GB?
About 80 seconds at 100 Mbps, 16 seconds at 500 Mbps and 8 seconds at 1 Gbps, at a steady speed and before overhead.
What uses the most data: gaming, video calls or messaging?
Usually video: cloud gaming and video calls use far more than online play or text messages. Game downloads and updates are often the biggest single item of all.
Are these calculators free and private?
Yes. There is no sign-up, and the calculations run in your browser; nothing you enter is uploaded.
