PS5 Download Time Calculator

Estimate PS5 download times from the game’s size and your connection speed.

A new PS5 game or a big day-one patch can mean a long wait before you can play. How long depends mostly on the download size and your internet speed - and the console then needs a little more time to copy and install what it downloaded.

Enter the download size and your speed in Mbps (or MB/s) to see how long the download should take at a steady rate, with an allowance for network overhead.

How this tool works

  1. Enter the download size

From the game’s page or the download list on your console.

  2. Enter your speed

Your plan in Mbps, or the download speed from the console’s internet connection test.

  3. Keep a small overhead allowance

    5% is a sensible default.

  4. Read the result

Download time in hours and minutes, and the total data transferred.

How it works

Download time = size × (1 + overhead) × 8 ÷ speed. An 80 GB game at 100 Mbps with no overhead takes 80 × 8,000 ÷ 100 = 6,400 seconds - 1 hour 47 minutes.

The console’s own network test reports your connection’s speed in Mbps, the same unit as your plan, so you can enter it directly. It is a snapshot; speeds vary through the day.

After the download, a PS5 typically copies and installs the data, and it needs enough free space on the internal SSD - or a compatible M.2 expansion SSD - to do so. Large updates can need temporary space beyond their own download size while files are rewritten.

Downloads can continue in rest mode if you allow it in the console’s power-saving settings. A wired Ethernet connection is usually faster and more stable than Wi-Fi, particularly when the console sits in a cabinet or far from the router.

Common use cases

  • Planning when to start a pre-load or a big patch so it is ready in time.
  • Checking whether a slow download is your connection or something else.
  • Deciding whether moving the console to a wired connection is worth it.
  • Estimating how long it will take to re-download a library after freeing up space.

Why PS5 downloads can take longer than the estimate

  • Wi-Fi signal loss through walls and cabinets, or interference from nearby networks.
  • Other devices in the house streaming or downloading at the same time.
  • Busy periods, such as a major release or update day, when servers and networks are under heavy load.
  • Copying and installing after the download, which depends on the console, not your connection.
  • A speed test taken at a quiet moment that is higher than your usual evening speed.

Mbps vs MB/s: why your download looks eight times slower

Internet plans are sold in megabits per second (Mbps). Game sizes are in gigabytes, and many download screens show megabytes per second (MB/s). A byte is 8 bits, so a 100 Mbps plan downloads at most 12.5 MB/s. Seeing “12.5 MB/s” on a 100 Mbps connection means it is working at full speed.

To estimate by hand: a gigabyte is 8,000 megabits, so each GB takes 80 seconds at 100 Mbps, 16 seconds at 500 Mbps and 8 seconds at 1 Gbps - before any slowdowns.

Time per 100 GB at a steady speed (no overhead)
25 Mbps (3.1 MB/s)8 h 53 min
50 Mbps (6.25 MB/s)4 h 27 min
100 Mbps (12.5 MB/s)2 h 13 min
300 Mbps (37.5 MB/s)44 min
500 Mbps (62.5 MB/s)27 min
1 Gbps (125 MB/s)13 min 20 s

Formula

Data transferred

download size × (1 + overhead %)

Download time (seconds)

data (bytes) × 8 ÷ speed (bits per second)

Per GB at 100 Mbps

8,000 megabits ÷ 100 Mbps = 80 seconds

Worked examples

An 80 GB game on a 100 Mbps connection

With no overhead, 80 GB × 8 ÷ 100 Mbps = 6,400 seconds - about 1 hour 47 minutes before the console finishes installing.

A 100 GB download at 400 Mbps (50 MB/s)

With 5% overhead, 105 GB × 8 ÷ 400 Mbps = 2,100 seconds, or 35 minutes.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a 100 GB PS5 game take to download?

At a steady 100 Mbps, about 2 hours 13 minutes with no overhead; at 500 Mbps about 27 minutes; at 1 Gbps about 13 minutes. Real downloads are often somewhat slower.

Why does the PS5 still say copying after the download finishes?

The console installs downloaded data into place, which takes a while for large games and patches. That step depends on the console and free space, not your internet speed.

Does the PS5 download faster in rest mode?

Rest mode lets downloads continue while you are not using the console, if the internet connection option is enabled in power-saving settings. It saves you waiting rather than guaranteeing a higher speed.

Will a wired connection help?

Often, yes. Ethernet avoids Wi-Fi signal loss and interference, and it is usually the single easiest improvement for a console. It cannot exceed your plan’s speed, though.

Does this calculator know the size of specific PS5 games?

No - sizes change with updates. Use the size shown for the game on your console or its store page.
