Xbox Download Time Calculator

Estimate how long an Xbox game or update will take to download on your connection.

Free to useNo sign-up requiredNo watermarkRuns in your browser

Whether it is a new Game Pass title or a large update, the wait depends on the download size and your connection. Xbox consoles can often let you start playing before everything has arrived, but the full download still takes as long as the maths says.

Enter the size and your speed in Mbps or MB/s to get a best-case time for the full download, plus the equivalent speed in MB/s.

How this tool works

  1. Enter the download size

From the Microsoft Store listing, your queue or Manage game.

  2. Enter your speed

Your plan in Mbps, or the result of the console’s network speed test.

  3. Keep an overhead allowance

5% covers network overhead; use 0 for the raw figure.

  4. Read the time

The full-download time, in hours, minutes and seconds.

How it works

Download time = size × (1 + overhead) × 8 ÷ speed. A 75 GB download at 100 Mbps with no overhead takes 75 × 8,000 ÷ 100 = 6,000 seconds - 1 hour 40 minutes.

Smart Delivery gives you the version of a game made for your console, so the same game can be a different download size on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. Use the size your own console shows.

Games optimised for Xbox Series X|S must be played from the internal SSD or a Storage Expansion Card. Other external USB drives can store them, and can run older Xbox One titles, so it is worth downloading straight to the drive you will play from.

Some games can be launched before the download finishes. The calculator shows the time for the whole download, which is what matters for installing the full game or an update.

Common use cases

  • Estimating when a Game Pass download or pre-install will be ready.
  • Deciding whether to leave the console downloading overnight.
  • Checking whether your speed-test result matches the download progress.
  • Planning large downloads on a connection with a monthly data cap.

Why Xbox downloads can be slower than your plan

  • Wi-Fi rather than Ethernet, especially through walls or a TV cabinet.
  • Other devices on your network using bandwidth at the same time.
  • Playing an online game while downloading, which can reduce the speed available to the download.
  • Busy periods, such as launch days, when servers and home networks are heavily loaded.
  • Installing after download, which depends on the console and the drive you download to.

Mbps vs MB/s: why your download looks eight times slower

Internet plans are sold in megabits per second (Mbps). Game sizes are in gigabytes, and many download screens show megabytes per second (MB/s). A byte is 8 bits, so a 100 Mbps plan downloads at most 12.5 MB/s. Seeing “12.5 MB/s” on a 100 Mbps connection means it is working at full speed.

To estimate by hand: a gigabyte is 8,000 megabits, so each GB takes 80 seconds at 100 Mbps, 16 seconds at 500 Mbps and 8 seconds at 1 Gbps - before any slowdowns.

Time per 100 GB at a steady speed (no overhead)
25 Mbps (3.1 MB/s)8 h 53 min
50 Mbps (6.25 MB/s)4 h 27 min
100 Mbps (12.5 MB/s)2 h 13 min
300 Mbps (37.5 MB/s)44 min
500 Mbps (62.5 MB/s)27 min
1 Gbps (125 MB/s)13 min 20 s

Formula

Data transferred

download size × (1 + overhead %)

Download time (seconds)

data (bytes) × 8 ÷ speed (bits per second)

MB/s to Mbps

MB/s × 8

Worked examples

A 75 GB game at 100 Mbps

With no overhead, 75 GB × 8 ÷ 100 Mbps = 6,000 seconds - 1 hour 40 minutes.

A 100 GB download at 400 Mbps

With 5% overhead, 105 GB × 8 ÷ 400 Mbps = 2,100 seconds - 35 minutes.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a 100 GB Xbox game take to download?

At a steady 100 Mbps about 2 hours 13 minutes, at 500 Mbps about 27 minutes, and at 1 Gbps about 13 minutes, before overhead and slowdowns.

Is the download size the same on Xbox One and Series X|S?

Not always. With Smart Delivery, each console downloads the version made for it, and those can differ in size. Check the size on your own console.

Can I download to an external drive?

Yes, but Xbox Series X|S-optimised games must be moved to the internal SSD or a Storage Expansion Card to play. Downloading to the drive you will play from avoids a second copy.

Does Xbox guarantee a download speed?

No. Your plan, home network and conditions on the day all affect it. The calculator gives the best case at the speed you enter.
