WhatsApp Data Usage Calculator
Estimate your WhatsApp data use from how much you message, call and share each day.

Text messages barely register on a data plan, but video calls and media can add up quickly - especially if photos and videos download automatically. Knowing which part of your WhatsApp use costs the most is the easiest way to keep a plan under control, whether at home or on a travel eSIM.
Enter roughly how many messages, call minutes, photos, videos, voice notes and statuses you have on a typical day. Each comes with an editable per-item figure, and you get daily, monthly and yearly totals with a breakdown.
How this tool works
Enter a typical day
Messages, call minutes, media shared and received, voice notes and status views.
Adjust the per-item figures if you like
The defaults are typical values; calls and media vary most.
Set days per month
30 for everyday use, fewer for a trip.
Read the totals
Per day, per month and per year, with the biggest users highlighted.
How it works
Each activity is count × data per item: for example 10 minutes of voice calls × 0.4 MB per minute = 4 MB a day. The day’s total is the sum of every activity, the month is the day × days per month, and the year is 12 months.
Typical figures used: about 2 KB per text message, 0.4 MB per minute of voice call, 5 MB per minute of video call, 0.25 MB per photo, 5 MB per short video, 0.12 MB per minute of voice message and 0.5 MB per status viewed. These are round values in line with widely reported measurements.
Actual use varies with call quality and network conditions, media quality settings (HD photos and videos are larger), how long videos are, and whether media downloads automatically. WhatsApp’s settings to use less data for calls and to limit media auto-download on mobile data can make a noticeable difference.
Common use cases
- Choosing a data plan or travel eSIM size before a trip.
- Finding out whether calls or media are using most of your allowance.
- Checking whether a family member’s WhatsApp use fits their prepaid plan.
- Deciding whether to turn off media auto-download on mobile data.

Worked examples
A typical day with the defaults
100 texts, 10 minutes of voice calls, 5 minutes of video calls, 20 photos, 3 videos, 3 minutes of voice notes and 10 statuses come to about 54.6 MB a day - about 1.64 GB a month. Video calls are almost half of it.
An hour of voice calls a day
60 minutes × 0.4 MB = 24 MB a day, or 720 MB over 30 days - still less than 2.5 hours of video calling at 5 MB a minute.
Frequently asked questions
How much data does a WhatsApp voice call use?
Commonly around 0.3–0.5 MB per minute, or roughly 20–30 MB per hour. It varies with the connection and whether the “use less data for calls” setting is on.
How much data does a WhatsApp video call use?
Much more - often around 3–8 MB per minute, so 200–500 MB per hour, depending on quality and connection. Group video calls can use more.
Do text messages use much data?
Hardly any. Even thousands of text messages a month add up to a few megabytes. Media and calls are what matter.
How can I reduce WhatsApp data use?
Limit media auto-download on mobile data, turn on the option to use less data for calls, send photos in standard rather than HD quality, and keep video calls for Wi-Fi where you can.
Does the calculator read my WhatsApp?
No. You type rough counts; nothing is connected to WhatsApp and the calculation runs in your browser.
