Find Duplicates in Excel and CSV

Free to useNo sign-up requiredNo watermarkRuns in your browser

Upload a spreadsheet, choose which columns decide whether two rows are the same, and see every duplicate group with its rows. You can then download the de-duplicated file, or just the duplicates for checking.

Two rows rarely need to be identical to be duplicates. Matching on an email address, or an invoice number and a supplier, is usually what people actually mean - so you pick the columns rather than being forced to compare whole rows.

How this tool works

  1. Add your spreadsheet

An XLSX, XLS or CSV file. Nothing is uploaded.

  2. Choose the columns that define a duplicate

Tick one column for a simple check, or several to treat rows as duplicates only when all of them agree.

  3. Decide how strict to be

By default, differences of spacing and capitalisation are ignored, so "ACME Ltd" and "acme ltd " count as the same. You can turn that off for an exact comparison.

  4. Review and download

Every duplicate group is listed with its rows. Download the file with duplicates removed, or a file containing only the duplicates.

How it works

Rows are grouped by a key built from the columns you choose. Any group with more than one row is a set of duplicates.

By default the comparison ignores leading and trailing spaces, repeated spaces, capitalisation and invisible characters, because those are almost never what someone means by a genuine difference. Turning that off compares the values exactly as stored.

Rows with a completely blank key are counted separately and never treated as duplicates of one another - twenty rows with no email address are twenty unknowns, not twenty copies of the same person.

When removing duplicates you choose whether to keep the first or the last of each group. Blank-key rows are always kept, because dropping them would lose data you never asked to lose.

Frequently asked questions

Is this duplicate finder free?

Yes, free with no sign-up.

Is my spreadsheet uploaded anywhere?

No. Your files stay on your device. The workbook is read and processed by your browser, so nothing is uploaded, stored or logged - which matters when the sheet holds customer records, invoices or payroll.

Can I find duplicates by more than one column?

Yes. Tick several columns and rows are only treated as duplicates when all of the chosen columns match.

Does it treat "ACME Ltd" and "acme ltd" as duplicates?

By default yes, because differences of capitalisation and spacing are usually accidental. You can switch to an exact comparison if those differences matter to you.

Which row is kept when duplicates are removed?

The first of each group by default, or the last if you prefer. Rows with a blank key are always kept.
