How to make a scanned PDF searchable
Quick answer
Upload the scanned PDF, choose Scanned PDF to Searchable PDF, and download the result. It looks pixel-for-pixel identical to the original - the only change is an invisible text layer underneath that makes Ctrl+F, text selection and copy-paste all work.
- 1Upload your scanned PDF.
- 2Choose Scanned PDF to Searchable PDF.
- 3Wait for every page to process.
- 4Download the searchable file.
Free, no sign-up, and your file is read on your own device rather than uploaded.
A scanned PDF that cannot be searched with Ctrl+F, or that will not let you select and copy a sentence, is missing something a typed document has: real text behind what you see. The visible page is just a picture - searching, selecting and copying all depend on genuine text characters existing in the file, and a scan has none.
Making it searchable adds exactly that, without changing anything about how the document looks: the original scanned image of each page stays exactly as it was, and an invisible, precisely positioned layer of real text sits underneath it. Open the result and it looks identical to the original - the difference only shows up when you try to search, select or copy.
Step by step
Choose Scanned PDF to Searchable PDF
Each page is read for its text and given an invisible text layer.

Tips
- A page that already has real, selectable text is kept exactly as it was rather than being OCR'd again - so running this on a mixed document does not degrade the pages that were already fine.
- Check the result with Ctrl+F for a word you know is on the page, and try selecting and copying a sentence - both should work exactly like a typed document.
- Once you have a searchable PDF, PDF to Word and PDF to Excel both work on it properly for the first time, since they need exactly the text layer this adds.
Common problems
You're not sure it actually worked, since the PDF looks the same.
That is expected and correct - the visible page is deliberately unchanged. Confirm it worked by pressing Ctrl+F and searching for a word you know is on the page, or by trying to select and copy a sentence.
One page in the result still is not searchable.
That page most likely failed OCR individually - a very low-quality scan, an unusual orientation, or a mostly-blank page can all cause this. Check that specific page's image quality and orientation.
You need the extracted text as its own document, not just a searchable PDF.
Use PDF to Text (or PDF to Word once the file is searchable) to get the text on its own, separate from the page images.
Frequently asked questions
- Will this change how my scanned PDF looks?
- No - the original page images are kept exactly as they were. Only an invisible text layer is added, which has no effect on the visible appearance.
- How do I check that it actually worked?
- Open the result and press Ctrl+F (or Cmd+F) to search for a word you know is in the document, or try selecting and copying a sentence with your mouse. Both should work as they would on a typed PDF.
- Does this work on a document with hundreds of pages?
- There is a page limit, since OCR runs on your own device rather than a server - very long documents are refused with a clear explanation rather than risking a frozen tab.
- Can I then convert the searchable PDF to Word?
- Yes - once a PDF has a real text layer, PDF to Word and PDF to Excel both work on it properly, which they could not on the original scan.
- Is my file uploaded to a server?
- No. Every page is processed entirely in your browser.
Doing several things to this file?
"Editing a PDF" is usually one of five different jobs. Open the file once and you can do all of them in sequence - reorder the pages, mark it, number it, sign it and shrink it - then download once at the end.
