The UAE's standard VAT rate has been 5% since it was introduced in January 2018. This calculator has it pre-filled and works in AED, so you can go straight to entering an amount.
It works in both directions: add VAT to a price, or work out the pre-VAT amount and VAT from a price that already includes it. Some goods and services are zero-rated or exempt rather than taxed at the standard rate - confirm the correct treatment for your specific case with the Federal Tax Authority or an accountant.
How this tool works
Choose add or remove
Adding VAT to a price and extracting it from a VAT-inclusive price are different calculations.
The 5% standard rate is already set
Tap 0% instead for zero-rated or exempt goods and services.
Enter the amount in AED
The pre-VAT price if adding VAT, or the total if removing it.
How it works
Adding VAT multiplies the amount by 5% and adds it on. Removing VAT divides the VAT-inclusive total by 1.05 to get the pre-VAT amount - not a straight subtraction of 5%, which would overstate the VAT.
The UAE also has zero-rated and exempt categories, which is different from a standard-rated item - which treatment applies depends on the specific goods or service.
Worked examples
AED 1,000 plus 5% VAT
VAT is AED 50, so the total charged is AED 1,050.
An AED 1,050 price that already includes 5% VAT
The pre-VAT amount is AED 1,000 and the VAT is AED 50.
