Four GCC countries currently levy VAT: the UAE and Oman at 5%, Bahrain at 10%, and Saudi Arabia at 15%. This calculator has all four rates pre-filled by country, so you can switch between them without having to look up or remember any rate.
It works in both directions: add VAT to a price, or work out the pre-VAT amount and the VAT itself from a price that already includes it. Pick the country first, since that sets both the rate and the currency used in the breakdown.
How this tool works
Choose the country
UAE, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain or Oman. This sets the rate and the currency used below.
Choose add or remove
Adding VAT to a price and extracting it from a VAT-inclusive price are different calculations.
Enter the amount
The pre-VAT price if adding VAT, or the total if removing it.
Read the breakdown
The net amount, the VAT amount and the gross (total) amount are all shown.
How it works
Adding VAT multiplies the net amount by the selected country's rate and adds it on. Removing VAT divides the VAT-inclusive total by (1 + rate) to get the net amount - not a straight subtraction of the percentage, which would overstate the VAT.
Each country's standard rate is read from a single rate table rather than typed into the page, so switching country changes both the percentage and the currency symbol together.
Saudi Arabia's 15% and Bahrain's 10% are both higher than the UAE and Oman's 5%, so the same price produces a noticeably different VAT amount purely from the choice of country - worth checking carefully when comparing cross-border invoices.
Current standard VAT rates in the GCC
- UAE: 5%, in effect since January 2018.
- Saudi Arabia: 15%, raised from 5% in July 2020.
- Bahrain: 10%, raised from 5% in January 2022.
- Oman: 5%, introduced in April 2021.
What this calculator does not do
- It does not cover Qatar or Kuwait, since neither currently levies a live VAT despite both having signed the GCC VAT framework.
- It does not know which rate applies to a specific good or service - all four countries have zero-rated and exempt categories alongside the standard rate.
- It is not tax advice. Confirm the correct rate and treatment for your specific transaction with the relevant tax authority (UAE's FTA, Saudi Arabia's ZATCA, Bahrain's NBR or Oman's OTA) or an accountant.
Formula
Add VAT
VAT = amount × rate, total = amount + VAT
Remove VAT
pre-VAT amount = total ÷ (1 + rate), VAT = total − pre-VAT amount
Worked examples
UAE: AED 2,100 that already includes 5% VAT
The pre-VAT amount is AED 2,000 and the VAT is AED 100.
Saudi Arabia: SAR 2,300 that already includes 15% VAT
The pre-VAT amount is SAR 2,000 and the VAT is SAR 300.
Bahrain: BHD 1,100 that already includes 10% VAT
The pre-VAT amount is BHD 1,000 and the VAT is BHD 100.
Frequently asked questions
Which GCC countries have VAT right now?
The UAE, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Oman. Qatar and Kuwait have signed the GCC VAT framework but had not implemented a live VAT as of this review.
What is the VAT rate in Saudi Arabia?
15%, since July 2020. It was raised from the original 5% introduced in January 2018.
What is the VAT rate in Bahrain?
10%, since January 2022, raised from the original 5% introduced in January 2019.
Why does removing VAT not just subtract the percentage?
Because the VAT was calculated on the pre-VAT amount, not on the total. Subtracting the percentage from the total overstates the VAT - dividing the total by (1 + rate) gives the correct pre-VAT amount.
Is this official guidance from a tax authority?
No - this is a general calculation tool. Confirm the correct rate and treatment for your specific goods or services with the relevant country's tax authority or an accountant.
