Australia's GST rate is 10%. This calculator has it pre-filled, so you can go straight to entering an amount. A number of items - including most basic food, health and education - are GST-free rather than taxed at the standard rate.

It works in both directions: add GST to a price, or work out the GST-exclusive amount and the GST itself from a GST-inclusive price. The commonly cited "divide by 11" trick for removing GST is exactly what dividing by 1.10 does - both give the same answer.

How this tool works

  1. Choose add or remove

Adding GST to a price and extracting it from a GST-inclusive price are different calculations.

  2. The 10% rate is already set

Tap 0% instead for GST-free goods and services.

  3. Enter the amount

The GST-exclusive price if adding GST, or the total if removing it.

How it works

Adding GST multiplies the amount by 10% and adds it on. Removing GST divides the GST-inclusive total by 1.10 to get the GST-exclusive amount - the same result as the "divide the total by 11" shortcut, since 1/11 of a GST-inclusive total equals 10% of the GST-exclusive amount.

GST-free items (most basic food, many health and education services) are a separate category from GST being merely "removed" - they are not taxed at all.

Worked examples

A$100 plus 10% GST

GST is A$10, so the total charged is A$110.

An A$110 price that already includes GST

The GST-exclusive amount is A$100 and the GST is A$10 - the same as dividing A$110 by 11.

Frequently asked questions

What is the GST rate in Australia?

10%.

Why do people say "divide by 11" to remove GST?

Because dividing a GST-inclusive total by 11 gives the same GST amount as dividing the total by 1.10 and subtracting - both are correct ways of expressing the same 10% calculation.

Is this official ATO guidance?

No - this is a general calculation tool. Confirm the correct GST treatment for your specific goods or services with the ATO or an accountant.
