View and Remove EXIF Data From a Photo

See what is hidden inside a photo - camera details, date and GPS location - then strip it before you share the file.

A photo file usually carries more than the picture itself. EXIF metadata embedded by the camera or phone can include the exact GPS coordinates of where it was taken, the camera or phone model, the date and time, and other details you did not choose to share.

This tool reads that metadata so you can see exactly what a photo is carrying, then removes it and gives you a clean copy - all in your browser, so the photo and its metadata are never uploaded anywhere.

How this tool works

  1. Upload a photo

    JPG, PNG or WebP.

  2. See what is hidden inside it

Camera or phone model, the date taken, and GPS coordinates if the file has them, shown plainly rather than buried in a technical dump.

  3. Remove it and download

One click strips the metadata and gives you a clean copy to download, with the same image, no hidden data attached.

How it works

For a JPEG, the metadata is removed directly from the file's EXIF segment, leaving the image data itself untouched - the picture is not re-compressed or re-encoded, only the hidden data block is taken out.

For other formats, the image is redrawn onto a canvas and re-exported, which drops ancillary metadata as a side effect of the re-encode.

Nothing is uploaded at any point. Reading the metadata and removing it both happen with your browser's own image-handling APIs, on your device.

Why this matters

  • A phone photo often carries the exact GPS coordinates of where it was taken - posting it online can reveal your home address, workplace, or a child's school without you realising.
  • Marketplace and rental listing photos, dating profile photos and photos shared with strangers are the situations where this metadata is most worth checking first.
  • Some social platforms and messaging apps strip this metadata automatically on upload, but not all of them do, and you cannot see which ones do from the app itself.

What this tool does not change

Removing metadata does not change how the photo looks - the visible image is identical. It only removes the hidden data block travelling alongside it.

Worked examples

A phone photo with GPS data

Uploading a phone photo often shows exact latitude and longitude, camera model and the date taken - all removable in one click.

A screenshot

Screenshots typically carry little or no EXIF data, since there is no camera sensor involved - the tool will show that plainly rather than inventing data.

Frequently asked questions

Is my photo uploaded anywhere?

No. Reading and removing the metadata both happen in your browser. The photo is never sent to VSThiran or anywhere else.

Does removing metadata reduce image quality?

For JPEG, no - the metadata is removed directly without re-encoding the picture. For other formats the image is redrawn and re-exported, which is visually lossless for PNG and very close to it for WebP.

Why does my photo show no GPS data?

Location tagging has to be turned on for the camera app when the photo was taken, and some apps and platforms strip it automatically before you ever download the file. No GPS data being found does not always mean none was ever recorded.

Should I do this before posting a photo online?

It is worth checking first, especially for photos taken with a phone at home, at work, or anywhere you would not want the exact location shared - marketplace listings and dating profiles are common cases where people are surprised by what a photo reveals.

Does this work on PNG and WebP, or only JPG?

All three. JPEG metadata is stripped directly from the file; PNG and WebP are cleaned by re-exporting the image, which removes their metadata too.
