Free JPG to PNG Converter
Convert a JPG into a lossless PNG, entirely in your browser.
Free to useNo sign-up requiredNo watermarkRuns in your browser
This free JPG to PNG converter turns a JPEG into a PNG on your own device, with the result previewed beside the original before you download it.
Worth knowing before you start: converting to PNG will not improve the picture. JPEG compression has already discarded detail permanently, and PNG simply stores what remains without losing any more. The file will usually get considerably larger.
How this tool works
Choose your JPG
A .jpg or .jpeg file, read straight from your device.
Check the preview
The PNG appears beside the original with both file sizes shown.
Download the PNG
Saved with the same name and a .png extension.
How it works
The JPEG is decoded to raw pixels and re-encoded as PNG. PNG uses lossless compression, so nothing further is discarded - but nothing that JPEG already threw away can be recovered either.
File size almost always increases, often several times over. That is expected: JPEG achieves its small size precisely by discarding information, while PNG keeps every pixel exactly.
The result has no transparency, because the JPEG source had none. PNG supports an alpha channel, but converting cannot invent one.
Everything runs in your browser. Your image never leaves your device.
When converting JPG to PNG makes sense
- A tool or platform that only accepts PNG uploads.
- You are about to edit the image repeatedly - working in PNG avoids compounding JPEG losses with every save.
- You need to add transparency afterwards in an editor; the PNG gives you a format that can hold it.
- A logo or diagram that was mistakenly saved as JPG, where you want to stop further quality loss from here on.
When it does not
Converting a photograph to PNG for the web is almost always the wrong move. The file will be much larger with no visible improvement, and pages will load more slowly for no benefit.
It also will not repair JPEG artefacts. Blocky edges and colour banding are baked into the pixels; PNG preserves them faithfully rather than removing them.
Worked examples
A platform that demands PNG
Some upload forms accept PNG only. Converting takes a second and the image is unchanged visually.
Before editing
Convert once to PNG, then edit and save repeatedly without accumulating further JPEG compression damage.
Preparing for transparency
Convert to PNG, then remove the background in an editor - JPG could not have stored the result.
Frequently asked questions
Is this JPG to PNG converter free?
Yes - free, no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on how many images you convert.
Are my images uploaded to a server?
No. Your images never leave your device. They are decoded and re-encoded by your browser, so nothing is transmitted to VSThiran and no copy is kept anywhere.
Will converting to PNG improve the quality?
No. JPEG has already discarded detail permanently. PNG preserves exactly what is left without losing more, but it cannot restore anything.
Why is the PNG so much bigger?
That is normal and expected. JPEG is lossy and achieves small files by throwing information away; PNG is lossless and keeps every pixel. A several-fold increase is typical for photographs.
Will the PNG have a transparent background?
No. The JPEG source has no transparency, and conversion cannot create it. You would need to remove the background in an image editor afterwards.
