Free PNG to JPG Converter
Convert a PNG to a smaller JPG, with transparency handled properly.
Free to useNo sign-up requiredNo watermarkRuns in your browser
This free PNG to JPG converter turns a PNG into a JPEG, which for photographs is usually dramatically smaller. You can set the quality and see the result beside the original before downloading.
One detail this gets right that many converters do not: transparent areas are filled with white. JPEG cannot store transparency, and a converter that simply drops the alpha channel leaves those areas black - a common and very visible bug.
How this tool works
Choose your PNG
A .png file, read straight from your device.
Set the quality
Around 80% is usually indistinguishable from the original at a fraction of the size.
Compare and download
The JPG is shown beside the PNG with both file sizes, so the trade-off is visible before you commit.
How it works
The PNG is decoded and redrawn onto a canvas, then encoded as JPEG at your chosen quality. JPEG is lossy, which is exactly why the file becomes so much smaller.
Before the image is drawn, the canvas is filled with white. Without that step, transparent pixels would be encoded as black - the single most common defect in browser-based PNG to JPG converters, and the reason a logo with a transparent background comes out on a black square elsewhere.
Photographs benefit enormously; a PNG photo commonly drops by 80% or more. Screenshots and diagrams benefit less, and text edges may soften noticeably.
Everything runs in your browser, so the image never leaves your device.
What happens to transparency
JPEG has no alpha channel - it simply cannot record which pixels are see-through. Something has to be put behind the image, and this tool uses white, which matches the background of most documents and web pages.
If the transparency matters - a logo destined to sit on a coloured background, for instance - do not convert to JPG at all. Keep the PNG, or use WebP, which supports both transparency and strong compression.
When PNG to JPG is the right call
- A photograph mistakenly saved as PNG - the saving here is usually enormous.
- A page loading slowly because of heavy PNG images with no transparency.
- An upload form that accepts JPG only.
- Any image with no transparency where file size matters more than perfect fidelity.
- Not for logos, icons, screenshots of text or anything needing a transparent background.
Worked examples
A screenshot saved as PNG
A 3 MB screenshot commonly drops to a few hundred kilobytes as JPG, though text edges will soften slightly.
A photo exported as PNG
The saving is often 80-90% with no visible difference at 80% quality.
A logo with a transparent background
Converting gives a white rectangle behind the logo. Keep the PNG instead if it needs to sit on a colour.
Frequently asked questions
Is this PNG to JPG converter free?
Yes - free, no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on how many images you convert.
Are my images uploaded to a server?
No. Your images never leave your device. They are decoded and re-encoded by your browser, so nothing is transmitted to VSThiran and no copy is kept anywhere.
What happens to transparent areas?
They are filled with white. JPEG cannot store transparency at all, so something must go behind the image - and white is far more useful than the black that converters produce when they simply drop the alpha channel.
How much smaller will the JPG be?
For photographs, usually 70-90% smaller. For screenshots and diagrams the saving is smaller and text may soften, so PNG is often the better choice for those.
Does converting lose quality?
Yes, JPEG is lossy by design. At around 80% quality the loss is very hard to see on a photograph. The side-by-side preview lets you judge before downloading.
Can I keep the transparency?
Not in a JPG - the format cannot store it. Use WebP instead if you want both transparency and a small file, or keep the original PNG.
