How it works
The tip is a percentage of the bill before splitting. The calculator adds it to the bill to give the total, then divides that total by the number of people.
Tipping customs vary a great deal between countries. In some places a service charge is already included on the bill and an extra tip is unusual; in others a tip of 15 to 20 per cent is expected. Check your bill for an existing service charge before adding more.
When a split does not divide evenly, the per-person figure is rounded to two decimal places for display. Rounding each share up to the nearest whole unit is the usual way to make sure the total is covered.

Worked examples
Bill 100, tip 20%, 4 people → 30 each
The tip is 20, the total is 120, and 120 ÷ 4 gives 30 per person.
Bill 85.50, tip 18%, 3 people → 33.63 each
The tip is 15.39, the total is 100.89, and each of the three pays 33.63.
Bill 47.20, tip 15%, 1 person → 54.28
The tip is 7.08, giving a total of 54.28 for a single diner.
Frequently asked questions
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Both are common. Tipping on the pre-tax subtotal is slightly cheaper and is widely accepted; tipping on the total is simpler. Enter whichever figure you want to tip on in the bill field.
What if a service charge is already on the bill?
Then a tip is usually not expected on top. If you still want to add something, enter a smaller percentage - the calculator accepts any value including decimals.
How does the split handle awkward numbers?
The per-person amount is shown to two decimal places. Because the shares are rounded for display, paying the exact displayed amount each can leave a fraction of a unit short, so rounding up is the safer habit.
Can I split between one person?
Yes. Set the number of people to 1 and the per-person figure simply matches the total.
