How to scan a QR code from a photo or screenshot

Quick answer

Upload the image to the barcode scanner and the QR code is found and decoded automatically - no button to press. Copy the value, or open it directly if it is a link.

  1. 1Upload the image.
  2. 2Wait a moment for it to decode automatically.
  3. 3Copy the value, or open it if it is a link.

Free, no sign-up, and your file is read on your own device rather than uploaded.

A phone camera scans a QR code by pointing at the physical thing - a poster, a screen, a printed page. That does not work when the code only exists as an image file: a screenshot someone sent you, a QR code embedded in a PDF, or a photo already saved to your device rather than something in front of you right now.

This reads the code directly from the image file instead - upload it, and the value comes back automatically, in your browser, with nothing sent anywhere.

Step by step

  1. Upload the image

A screenshot, a photo, or any image file containing the QR code.

  2. Wait for it to decode

Happens automatically as soon as the image loads - no button to press.

  3. Copy or open the result

Copy the decoded value, or open it directly if it turns out to be a web link.

Tips

  • A cropped, well-lit, in-focus image of the code decodes most reliably - a lot of empty space around a blurry code is the most common reason a scan fails.
  • If the value turns out to be a web address, an "Open link" button appears alongside Copy so you do not have to paste it into a new tab yourself.
  • This also reads regular 1D barcodes (EAN, UPC, Code 128 and others), not only QR codes, if that is what the image contains instead.

Common problems

The scan says no code was found.

Try a clearer or higher-resolution version of the image, or crop it closer to just the code - a lot of surrounding background can make a small or low-contrast code harder to find.

You only have a printed code, not an image of one.

Photograph it with your phone first, or use your phone's own camera app, which scans a physical code directly without needing this tool at all.

Frequently asked questions

Can I scan a QR code from a screenshot?
Yes - upload the screenshot and the code is decoded automatically, the same as any other image.
Does this work with a photo taken on my phone?
Yes - JPG, PNG and WebP images all work, whether from a camera, a screenshot, or a file someone sent you.
Is my image uploaded to a server?
No. The image is read and decoded entirely in your browser, on your own device.
Does it decode regular barcodes too, not just QR codes?
Yes - EAN, UPC, Code 128 and several other common barcode formats are supported alongside QR codes.
