Can't copy text from a PDF? Here's why, and how to fix it

Quick answer

Usually one of two things: the PDF is a scan with no real text at all (needs OCR), or it has real text but your PDF viewer's selection is behaving oddly (upload it here instead and extract the text directly). Check the PDF Inspector if you are not sure which.

  1. 1Try selecting text with your mouse in the original PDF.
  2. 2If nothing highlights, it is a scan - run OCR.
  3. 3If it highlights but copying misbehaves, extract the text here instead.

There are really only two reasons you cannot copy text from a PDF, and they need completely different fixes. Telling them apart takes ten seconds: try selecting a line of text with your mouse in the PDF viewer. If nothing highlights at all, the page is a scan - a picture of text, not real text. If it highlights but copying it produces garbled characters, missing spaces, or nothing on paste, the text is real but something about extracting it is going wrong.

Either way, the fix does not depend on finding a better PDF viewer - it is to extract the text directly rather than fighting with select-and-copy.

Step by step

  1. Test which problem you have

Try selecting a line of text with your mouse in the original PDF.

  2. Nothing highlights: it is a scan

Upload it to the OCR workspace, which reads the text out of the image directly.

  3. It highlights but copying misbehaves: extract it directly

Upload the PDF here and extract the text as plain text or Markdown, bypassing select-and-copy entirely.

Tips

  • A PDF Inspector check settles this in one step if you are unsure - it tells you directly whether the document has real, selectable text or is a scan.
  • Copying text that looks fine on screen but pastes with missing spaces or run-together words is usually a font-encoding quirk in the original PDF - extracting the text with a tool built for it usually recovers this cleanly where a plain copy-paste does not.
  • If you only need one word or a short phrase, sometimes zooming in and selecting more carefully in the PDF viewer is faster than any tool - reach for extraction when it is the whole page or document you need.

Common problems

Nothing highlights when you try to select text.

The page is a scan - a picture of text, not real text at all. There is nothing a copy-paste or a text extractor can recover without OCR reading the image first.

Text highlights but pastes with words run together or missing spaces.

This is usually how the original PDF encoded its fonts, not something wrong with your PDF viewer. Extracting the text with a dedicated tool generally handles this correctly where a manual copy-paste does not.

You copied text and it came out as strange symbols.

A font-encoding mismatch in the original PDF. Extract the text directly instead of copy-pasting from the viewer.

Frequently asked questions

Why can I not select any text in this PDF?
The page is almost certainly a scan - a photograph or scanned image of a page, with no real text behind it at all. Selection and copying both need real text characters to work on, which a scan does not have. OCR reads the text out of the image directly.
I can select text but copying it looks wrong when I paste - why?
That's usually a font-encoding issue in how the original PDF stores its text, not a problem with your PDF viewer. Extracting the text with a dedicated tool typically recovers it correctly.
Is there a faster way than copy-pasting page by page?
Yes - extract the whole document's text in one pass rather than selecting and copying section by section.
Is my PDF uploaded to a server?
No. Both the OCR workspace and the text extractor read your file entirely in your browser.
